The working group of Prof. Dr. Witt is a partner in the project „Oasis Innovation Hub for Catastrophe and Climate Extremes Risk Assessment“ (acronym H2020_INSURANCE) which is part of the EU Horizon2020 funding program. This project started on the 1st of May 2017, the project duration is 36 months.

The goal of this project is the development of the OASIS Loss-Modelling Framework. This framework is able to relate climatic events to damage and losses. The aim is to create a standardized risk evaluation system which uses models to calculate potential losses and regions with a high risk.

The lead of the work package WP 2.3.1 "Climate Services for the Health Sector" is taken by the staff of the Department of Outpatient Pneumology. In this work package, the influence of climate and air quality on vulnerable patient groups like COPD patients is examined using health data from the years 2005 to 2015. The patient data are taken from patients who were admitted to the hospitals in downtown Berlin and in Potsdam and are merged in an anonymized health database together with data on climatic conditions. The goal is the development of a "health damage function" which allows for a correlation between the climate and the patients' health. This model is supposed to give insights on the risks of climate change for public health.

Partners in this project are the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine London, ARIA Technologies and the Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU).
