Cooperation with the IASS

In a cooperation between the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam and the Department of Outpatient Pneumology of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the effects of air quality and temperature on vulnerable patient groups, consiting of patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, are to be examined. The title of the project is „Air pollution, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma exacerbations in Berlin, Germany”.

Relation between air pollution, nitrogen dioxide and hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma exacerbations in Berlin, Germany

In the times of climate change, climate impact research grows more and more important. Especially the air quality and the air pollution in cities is of great importance. Air pollution is a critical risk factor for diseases of the respiratory system. Worldwide research evidence suggests that adverse effects of even short-term exposure to NO2 are independent of particles and gaseous pollutants.

Air pollution, nitrogen dioxide and hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma exacerbations in Berlin, Germany

This project will be carried out in close cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam. Research conducted at the IASS focuses on guiding transformation processes towards a sustainable society. This is done by advancing the comprehension of problems and presenting solution options. This is achieved by cooperations with partners in academia, political institutions, administrations, civil society, and the business community.

The research of the Department of Outpatient Pneumology has been focusing for decades on investigating the clinical impacts of climate change. In these research projects, patients of vulnerable groups are examined.

The goal of this project is to investigate what effects nitrogen dioxide has on the vulnerable patient groups suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. For this purpose, patient data is combined with weather and air quality data supplied by the IASS.

Project duration: 2018 - 2019
